Tennis Betting Guide

Tennis tournaments are played throughout the year with the exception of December, when the players take a well-deserved break. The ATP, (Association of Tennis Professionals), deals with the men’s tournaments with the ATP World Tour while the WTA, (Women’s Tennis Association), handles the women’s tournaments.

There are plenty of odds on offer whether you bet on an outright winner of the tournament or match. Or perhaps wish to predict the scores for each set, or even how many aces will be served in a game. Below are details of the four major tournaments held every year?

Australian Open

The first open of the season is held in Melbourne, Australia in January. This historic event started in 1905. The two week tournament includes men’s and women’s singles, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles plus wheelchair tennis for men’s, women’s and quad matches. As opposed to the Wimbledon championships which can be interrupted by rain, the tennis in Australia can be postponed due to extreme heat.

French Open

The French men's singles championships were first held in Paris and six years later the women’s championship was also added. Initially their Championships were held for French players only, but in 1925 the French Tennis Federation opened up the event to include the best foreign players too. In 1928 the event was moved to the Roland-Garros stadium where it has remained ever since. It is now always held at the end of May into early June.

Wimbledon Tennis

The AELTC at Wimbledon hosts the most prestigious tennis tournament every year in London SW19, its first Championship was held in 1877. It is held during the last week of June and the first week of July both Men’s and Women’s elite in tennis, (in fact 584 players competed in 2011), play on 41 grass courts, for some of the largest prize money available at just one tournament.

US Open

Another major tournament is the US Open held every August and it takes place at the famous Flushing Meadows in New York. It is the fourth and final major tournament of the year. The first ever US Open was won by Arthur Ashe, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. But he was unable to collect his prize money due to his amateur status. It is another 2 week tournament and last year’s winners were Novak Djokovic winning the men’s finals and Samantha Stosur the women’s.
